The cotton powerloom industry was started some time towards the beginning of the 20th century. Attracted by the relative merits of the weaving with the help of power. some enterprising traditional handloom weavers gradually took over to the convenient and efficient system of cloth weaving. The machinery was mostly second-hand discarded by Mills which was employed by renovating, and reconditioning the same.
It could be stated that the major factor behind the installation Of power looms has been the desire of the handloom weavers to improve their efficiency and productivity and reduce the strain of operation.
The power loom is a golden means between well organized mill sector and outdated handlooms.
Ichalkaranji a place in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra is 250 miles away from Mumbai. With only 10,000 population around 1940. Only a few handloom weavers struggled for their existence.
The first powerloom was installed here at Ichalkaranji by late. Shri Vithalraoji Datar. This was the first powerloom in India in the decentralized powerloom sector. The industry has however taken shape around 1945. The Ichalkaranji powerloom Weavers' Co-op. Association Ltd., came into being in 1948.
Distribution of yarn and other raw materials like chemicals was the good job performed by the Association, with the development in the industry the owners had to face the problems of excise duty, textile and labour laws. Excise duty was imposed of power looms and in 1953 the Association had projected the Government. Beside these individuals problems, our Association had taken a leading part in establishing spinning mills at and around Ichalkaranji. So also the erection of power and Hand Processing houses is yet another achievement. The Association invested Rs.2.00 lakhs in the Deccan Co-op. Spinning Mills Ltd., and gave a solid helping.
